Because those old-fashioned record deals were usually five album deals so I always thought that after five albums it was a big moment for some reason. I released my first album, '<b>Bless</b>' nine years ago. I would just like the people who retain an interest in my music to hear from me I guess. Like making a speech! And speeches should be light-hearted yet heart-felt, reflecting on the journey undertaken and the lessons learned, and conclude with a thank you to the caterers.</span><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The journey has been bizarre but beautiful. It has taken me from England to Scotland, France, Germany, Canada, Romania, Ukraine, the US, Poland and the Czech Republic. It even spawned a child - <a href="https://freeswim.bandcamp.com/">Free Swim</a>. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">A brief timeline: in 2009 I had almost all of my musical equipment stolen on day one of recording album two, '<b>Glow Worm</b>', in London. But despite driving home in tears that night I soldiered on and made just enough money from that record to spend a euphoric summer in New York a year later where I wrote album 3, '<b>Marble Sun</b>'. In 2011, I travelled from Romania to Berlin via Ukraine and Budapest writing album 4, '<b>Lie Back and Think of England</b>'. And in 2014 I left England for what could prove to be the long-term to the country in which I am writing this - the Czech Republic. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Why did I leave England? Shortly, I would say that I just wasn't very happy, hadn't been for quite a long time, and had found that whenever I left England, it really brought out the best in me. I realised that I didn't want to be the best I can be just once or twice a year, but every day. </span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I headed for Canada because I had a good friend there and it would act as a gateway to visiting all the US musical cities over a number of years. I couldn't get a work visa, so returned to Europe, got a Teaching English qualification in Prague, a city which I quickly fell in love with, and settled therein. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Why hadn't I been happy in England? After difficult and conflicting experiences at private-school and university it then became suffocatingly impossible to articulate and justify to colleagues in a succession of surreal 'day-jobs', and to family, what creating music and being a songwriter truly meant to me. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">'Have you heard of Myspace?'. 'Why don't you try the X Factor?'. </span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">But the question I came to dread most was 'how's the music going Paul?'. Inside I just wanted to say 'Wonderful. It's always been wonderful and I can't imagine how it won't always be wonderful. When I'm writing and recording songs and albums my asthma vanishes, my fingernails grow, time disappears and I feel beautiful. It's always felt that way and I think it always will.' Maybe it was paranoia but it felt like they were asking from an 'industry perspective' so I would blurt out these awkward, bumbling responses about late-night radio play or tepid interest from indie labels they'd never heard of. 'Oh that's nice, well, good luck with it. How long have you been working here now?'. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Week after week, month after month, year after year. T</span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">hat 'industry perspective' mentality infected me - I began to feel that that was the only way by which my music could be deemed a 'success'. But </span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I had some angelic friends and I cherished time with other musicians who totally 'got it' and were so supportive. Just knowing that they truly understood why I was doing what I was doing and not questioning it in anyway, or expecting it to be or become something more than what it is - simply an expression of gratitude to nature for the gift of life. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Five Android Albums and one EP in nine years. Add to that an album and five EPs for Free Swim during that time and an album and two EPs with <a href="https://arcs.bandcamp.com/album/so-hows-the-band-ep">Arcs</a>. It's what I love to do. Some friends have told me that my output is quite 'prolific' but for me it's just me doing what I do. A songwriter writes songs. Right?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Yet I have also felt huge creative guilt and regret that I don't have an 'art school' mentality which could have made my music more consistently innovative and interesting. </span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">There have been clunky dabbles with the music industry which left me very frustrated and disillusioned. I embraced the DIY ethic but in truth i</span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">t was an annoying distraction having to try and manage, release, promote and maybe even perform the music when I didn't really feel like I knew what I was doing on those fronts, and then learning from the mistakes when it was probably 'too late'. B</span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">ut my close friend Emma Fox once said to me 'judge every project by what you learn' and it is the best piece of advice I have ever received. Because it reminds you that the whole process is just a journey - just a ride. It was just all the bullshit that got in the way of that which made walking that path so bloody stressful - all my hair literally fell out! </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">What has been perhaps the greatest gift however, is the fact that it is now wholly possible to record albums at a fraction of the cost than in decades gone by. Twenty years ago (when I first listened to 'Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space', 'OK Computer', 'Deserter's Songs' and 'Radiator' and fell in love with the concept of 'the album') it would cost hundreds of thousands of pounds to record and release an album globally. Now with a relatively small investment you can record an album at home and release it on iTunes to living rooms across the world. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">So underneath that difficult time in England where I had just wanted to write, record and release in peace but had so often felt like I was a disappointment because I wasn't commercially successful, this magical thing had been taking place where the costs of producing what I wanted to produce were coming right down to a lab-technicians wage. And thus I've recorded relentlessly as anyone would if the thing they loved to do suddenly became completely affordable having for so long seemed so helplessly out of reach. I slowly learned about music production thanks in great part to patient and supportive friends like Phil Bashford, though it will always be a source of quite deep frustration that I wanted to study music production when I was 18 but for complicated reasons, couldn't. It meant that with most of my releases I was always a little disappointed that the albums didn't 'sound' as good as I wanted them to. But I'm getting there. If I compare the sound of album 1 to album 5, the progress is, I hope, quite noticeable.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The biggest lesson I learned on the new album, '<b>The Hissing and the Hum</b>', was to take a six month break between tracking (recording the songs) and mixing, and I have my close, talented friend, <a href="https://eldenmusic.bandcamp.com/album/fuga-rapto-ep">Will Howes</a> to thank for that. It meant I could edit and mix the album with completely fresh ears, almost as if I was mixing somebody else's record. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The album's sound was largely inspired by a music promotions company I discovered in Prague called <a href="http://riverpromotions.eu/">River Promotions</a>. They invite mainly kraut, stoner, psyche, prog and surf-rock bands including <a href="https://www.google.cz/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjxy6L2v8fWAhUHYlAKHRclCicQFggoMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theeohsees.com%2F&usg=AFQjCNHKGv4wJ8fc9fyBu0pxm15uYmdzEQ">Thee Oh Sees</a>, <a href="https://www.google.cz/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiY_YWCwMfWAhWFK1AKHewZBMQQFggoMAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Ffollakzoid.bandcamp.com%2F&usg=AFQjCNGfOykZrwddERoDffA6MmRrUih39Q">Follakzoid</a>, <a href="https://www.google.cz/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwi6nemIwMfWAhXEZ1AKHbDkDkUQFggoMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.qujaku.com%2F&usg=AFQjCNHwpPiMtlRs4Oo4SfIrnXKc-9DzKA">Qujaku</a>, <a href="https://www.google.cz/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjF0ZyQwMfWAhVMZVAKHXOqAL0QFggoMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.woodenshjips.com%2F&usg=AFQjCNHcS52yt0R3qf8YcynyVh0BWf6PfA">Wooden Shjips</a>, <a href="https://www.google.cz/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwin_N6YwMfWAhXPh7QKHRmvBC8QFggoMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Facidmothers.com%2F&usg=AFQjCNFODrxi9_Wrv-1cyagmGWvFCaq2Nw">Acid Mothers Temple</a> and many more to play in Prague. The venues are pokey and filthy and wonderful and I've come to recognise familiar faces in the crowd. At the gigs I can feel the kind of magical urgency of a 'scene', and the hissing of the treble and the hum of the bass have made me rediscover my love for live music in which I can simply bask, and not, as a songwriter, analyse and spy.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">If you do download the album (<a href="https://goo.gl/CgcHYc">Spotify</a>, <a href="https://goo.gl/vYC7np">iTunes</a>, <a href="https://goo.gl/WnFwSy">Bandcamp</a>) I really hope you enjoy it. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Sincerest of thanks to the caterers,</span><br />

<i>'<a href="http://sweepingthenation.blogspot.co.uk/">Sweeping the Nation</a>' new music blog asked me to write a song by song guide of my new album '<a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/">Lie Back Think of England</a>'. Here it is:</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
In the summer of 2011, I took my guitar to Eastern Europe where I spent 10 days working on a farm in Romania, 3 days working on a farm in Ukraine, 10 days at Sziget Festival in Hungary, and 7 days in Berlin. 'Lie Back and Think of England' is the album I have made about my experience.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<b>1. Homes</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I recorded the bells sound onto my mobile phone while on a cycle ride high up in the mountains of Transylvania. They were hung around two horses' necks. I added the sound of a piper. The bells kinda slowly pan across the speakers while the piper is constant to create the image of a lone musician on a hill side watching a small procession go past.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<iframe allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0" height="100" src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=2046579692/size=venti/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/" style="display: block; height: 100px; position: relative; width: 400px;" width="400"><a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/track/homes">Homes by The Android Angel</a></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>2. Solutions</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I met an English guy called Danny on the farm in Romania and travelled with him to Ukraine to work on a Water Buffalo Farm. He was really passionate about Bears. I found him quite inspirational. He also gave me a book about the importance of finding a passion. I never read it - I kinda felt I didn't need to because I figured Danny probably embodied it's message.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0" height="100" src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=1584870972/size=venti/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/" style="display: block; height: 100px; position: relative; width: 400px;" width="400"><a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/track/solutions">Solutions by The Android Angel</a></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>3. Lie Back and Think of England</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Being a long way from England gave me a different view of it. Public confidence in the government and the press was reeling from the expenses and phone hacking scandals, and then the riots started while I was away too. England likes to portray itself at the forefront of enlightenment, and in a lot of ways I think it is, but at that time it also showed how stuck in the dark ages it is in some ways too. The female vocal is provided by my friend Sarah Mahony. Was chuffed when John Kennedy played this song on XFM.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0" height="100" src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=2194291872/size=venti/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/" style="display: block; height: 100px; position: relative; width: 400px;" width="400"><a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/track/lie-back-and-think-of-england-2">Lie Back and Think of England by The Android Angel</a></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>4. Distant Star</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I met this amazing girl in Ukraine who helped me get to a train station so I could continue my journey. I wrote this song for her. This song was featured on the BBC Introducing Mixtape.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0" height="100" src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=85545299/size=venti/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/" style="display: block; height: 100px; position: relative; width: 400px;" width="400"><a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/track/distant-star">Distant Star by The Android Angel</a></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>5. Ability Park</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I met a girl called Asia on the train into Hungary and I went with her to Sziget Festival in Budapest. While I was there I met lots of people from all over Europe which was really enriching. This instrumental is supposed to represent those glorious hazy wanders from stage to stage at a music festival.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0" height="100" src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=25430371/size=venti/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/" style="display: block; height: 100px; position: relative; width: 400px;" width="400"><a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/track/ability-park">Ability Park by The Android Angel</a></iframe><br />
<b>6. Foreign Son</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This was actually the first song I wrote when I spent the summer of 2010 in New York. It didn't quite fit with the album borne from that experience (2011's '<a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/album/marble-sun">Marble Sun</a>'), but it seems to fit on this one. I wrote it in Washington Square and I think it is New York talking to me telling me to man up and enjoy life instead of writing loads of 'cry-wank' music which I had been doing up to then!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<iframe allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0" height="100" src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=2143188471/size=venti/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/" style="display: block; height: 100px; position: relative; width: 400px;" width="400"><a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/track/foreign-son">Foreign Son by The Android Angel</a></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>7. Her Shoulders</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I have a thing about shoulders.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<iframe allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0" height="100" src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=142938846/size=venti/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/" style="display: block; height: 100px; position: relative; width: 400px;" width="400"><a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/track/her-shoulders">Her Shoulders by The Android Angel</a></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>8. Chicago John</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Recording live drums can be such a mission so I goofed around for the first time with midi beats on garage band. I recorded 4 or 5 songs which were mostly awful but I couldn't get this one out of my head. I had a bit of a rough year last year and often I couldn't get to sleep. To help me sleep I invented this imaginary, comic-book world of espionage in my head and Chicago John was one of the characters in it. This song was also featured on the BBC Introducing Mixtape and played on 6 Music by Gideon Coe.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0" height="100" src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=2608297745/size=venti/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/" style="display: block; height: 100px; position: relative; width: 400px;" width="400"><a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/track/chicago-john-2">Chicago John by The Android Angel</a></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>9. A Parliament of Owls</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Without wanting to sound like a dick I think this track most represents where I am musically in 2013 - lost for words, searching for something new, a little bit devoid of inspiration, stuck in a tunnel. For that reason it works above all others as the final 'full' composition on the record. I am moving out to North America for a few years at the end of July to start new projects and recordings.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0" height="100" src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=3774751847/size=venti/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/" style="display: block; height: 100px; position: relative; width: 400px;" width="400"><a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/track/a-parliament-of-owls">A Parliament of Owls by The Android Angel</a></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>10. Follow the River</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This short outro is the orchestration from the title track given it's own space as the sun sets on the record. It was a very, very profound experience in Eastern Europe that I am not entirely sure I will ever fully get my head around.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0" height="100" src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=3339953962/size=venti/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/" style="display: block; height: 100px; position: relative; width: 400px;" width="400"><a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/track/follow-the-river">Follow the River by The Android Angel</a></iframe></div>

I released the third Free Swim EP, '<a href="http://freeswim.bandcamp.com/album/dennis">Dennis</a>', at the beginning of the year. It was one of the hardest records I've ever made because I was so wary of compromising the 'legacy' of the <a href="http://freeswim.bandcamp.com/album/two-hands-is-ok">first</a> <a href="http://freeswim.bandcamp.com/album/yolanda-the-panda">two</a> Free Swim EPs that both received overwhelmingly positive press and radio support. I was very tempted to quit while I was ahead but Free Swim EPs are so much fun to make that I decided to man up and make another. I also had a pretty empty calendar...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thankfully I am really proud of 'Dennis' (I worked bloody hard on it!) and it's single '<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTO61DzR3fU">The Smell of Pregnancy</a>' in particular. I was thrilled that <a href="https://twitter.com/BBCGidCoeShow">Gideon Coe</a> on 6 Music and <a href="https://twitter.com/johnkennedy_xfm">John Kennedy</a> on XFM really got behind it. For <a href="https://twitter.com/cerysmatthews">Cerys Matthews</a> to play it on 6 Music too was the icing on the cake - as <a href="https://twitter.com/deadbycinema">Ryan Say</a> (Free Swim drums) and I were bounding our way back from Scotland having just made a short silent film called '<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMf5OWQ2Khw">Zoo</a>' I got a text from my buddy Rooser telling me she was playing it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/XuIklSQuJE8" width="560"></iframe> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was a little <a href="http://follyfollyfolly.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/free-swim-she-dreams-in-lights-q.html">unstable</a> around the time of the creation of '<a href="http://freeswim.bandcamp.com/album/she-dreams-in-lights">She Dreams in Lights</a>' (the fourth Free Swim EP) in February. I felt I'd made something truly special in 'The Smell of Pregnancy' on the 'Dennis' EP and yet the band was still managerless/agentless/labelless - rudderless essentially despite considerable press and radio support. Me and a couple of the other guys in the band found that really hard to get our heads around.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the flip side though, 'She Dreams...' was a lovely record to
make as I felt none of the pressure I'd felt making 'Dennis'.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Spring came and as the release of 'She Dreams...' approached I collaborated with my friend Jack Spencer on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4mLmAhhraw">two</a> <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8_eeukeyNs">videos</a> for the opening two songs on the EP. Working with Jack (and Ryan) this year was an absolute joy and a real privilege. Ryan recorded drums for Free Swim EP 5 in June. It will be out next summer and his performance is a delight. Dave is all over it too and I've had it profesionally mixed and mastered.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/P8_eeukeyNs" width="560"></iframe> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I released my friend Thom Bowden's <a href="http://thombowden.com/">debut EP</a> on my label <a href="http://sexfarmrecords.tumblr.com/">Sex Farm Records</a> in the summer and did an <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00wb69j">interview for Huw Stephens on Radio 1</a> about Thom, Free Swim, Android Angel and Sex Farm. I was very proud of that and also very nervous in the days leading up to recording it!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/interactive/2012/oct/17/free-swim-360-degrees-video">The Hospital Club Session</a> was an amazing day out in London and I was thrilled for the songs we recorded to be featured on the Guardian and <a href="http://amazingradio.co.uk/showcontent/gillmills/hospital-sessions-free-swim">Amazing Radio</a> websites in October. In the same month we had a very <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdDofM7zLf4">memorable time at the Carefully Planned Festival</a> in Manchester and we enjoyed <a href="http://sexfarmrecords.tumblr.com/post/34752452275/free-swim-at-the-bbc-10-12-swimmingfreely">recording a BBC Introducing Session in Brighton too</a>.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Between August and October I finished a new <a href="http://www.facebook.com/theandroidangel">Android Angel</a> record which I've called '<i>Lie Back and Think of England</i>'. A song from it will surface at the beginning of 2013. I am nervous and excited to see how it is received - it is the first Android Angel record I've written since '<a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/album/marble-sun">Marble Sun</a>' in 2010. (People often ask me what the difference is between Free Swim and Android Angel and I realised this year that the simplest way to put it is that Free Swim is the music of my head and Android Angel is the music of my heart).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I felt like I was running out of inspiration a little in 2010 but then a summer in New York inspired Free Swim. I've been feeling that way again this year and am ready for another adventure! It's a big, brilliant world out there and my time in New York in 2010 and travelling through Eastern Europe in 2011 have given me the confidence to do something completely bonkers and beautiful next summer. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To those who maintain an interest in my music and have been of support through a year that was both joyful and a bit weird, thank you.</div>

Here is my 4th Free Swim EP, '<b>She Dreams In Lights</b>'.
I was really influenced by <a href="http://www.fatpossum.com/artists/youth-lagoon">Youth Lagoon</a>, <a href="http://www.facebook.com/washed.out">Washed Out</a> and <a href="http://mercuryrev.com/">Mercury Rev</a> on this record. I also wanted to tone down the whimsy a touch in favour of something with a little more 'substance'.<br />
<br />
I recorded it in back in February in Leatherhead and Reigate in Surrey. It was also a bit of a collaboration with my friend <a href="http://www.jackspencerdesign.com/">Jack Spencer</a> who created videos for two of the songs (see below).<br />
<br />
I am really proud of the record and was lucky enough <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/introducing/2012/07/huws_label_of_love_sex_farm_re.shtml">to talk about Free Swim, Android Angel & Sex Farm Records</a> on Radio 1 for <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0081dq5">Huw Stephens</a>' show back in July. <br />

I lived in Williamsburg, Brooklyn for 5 weeks and recorded the album on my return to England over the following 8 months with Steve Matthews and Joe Truscott. For those interested, here is some background behind each track on the album, 'Marble Sun'. The record is currently free to download from <a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/album/marble-sun">bandcamp</a>.<br /><br />1. <b>Long Meadow</b></span></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><div><iframe width="300" height="100" style="position: relative; display: block; width: 300px; height: 100px;" src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=2265098822/size=grande/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/transparent=true/" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"><a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/track/long-meadow">Long Meadow by The Android Angel</a></iframe></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">On my first Friday night in New York I witnessed <a href="http://open.spotify.com/artist/6DKmuXxXASTF6xaJwcTfjv">Spiritualized</a> play '<a href="http://open.spotify.com/album/4GMgNPA4fMv3U0QQsdRLJk">Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating in Space</a>' in it's entirety at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan. It's my favourite album from one of my favourite bands and to see it performed live in perhaps the greatest venue I've ever been to was, as you'd expect, very special. To be honest, that evening will forever remain one of the most incredible experiences of my life and I think it really influenced the first half of ' Marble Sun' at least. It's very evident on 'Long Meadow' with the fuzzy drone, the steady build up, the 6/8 time signature, and the distorted-tremolo climax towards the end. </div><br />Two days after the Spiritualized show I went to Prospect Park in Brooklyn for the first time. It was a beautiful day, and I wrote 'Long Meadow' (named after - but not actually written in - an area of the park). The sample at the very end of the track is me recording the riff onto my mobile phone by the lake that day so I didn't forget it. I am very, very fond and proud of this song and the memory of the day and place that it was conceived. I even had the following photo made into a mousemat and a keyring. The riff came to me in my apartment in Brooklyn. I wrote the words one warm, early evening on the High Line - a raised, disused railway track on the West Side of Manhattan that has recently been converted to public gardens and art space. The first two tracks on the record are supposed to symbolise the overwhelming sensory overload of my first week in New York.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Georgia, serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMA59sMNftadTd3cUkTuLe42T0HZsJ8GOdV-t-2klrTdF-pCIbr6kIK1K5DF-oAOK1NNaTLM3qvYluTPmuBgAd8krg706q9kUuL0zrpUbSONAMxSm3bch4gBuqmpGeLNUrLGOKmaSs-tM/s1600/IMAG0067.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMA59sMNftadTd3cUkTuLe42T0HZsJ8GOdV-t-2klrTdF-pCIbr6kIK1K5DF-oAOK1NNaTLM3qvYluTPmuBgAd8krg706q9kUuL0zrpUbSONAMxSm3bch4gBuqmpGeLNUrLGOKmaSs-tM/s320/IMAG0067.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603629863152604274" style="cursor: pointer; width: 192px; height: 320px; " /></a></span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMA59sMNftadTd3cUkTuLe42T0HZsJ8GOdV-t-2klrTdF-pCIbr6kIK1K5DF-oAOK1NNaTLM3qvYluTPmuBgAd8krg706q9kUuL0zrpUbSONAMxSm3bch4gBuqmpGeLNUrLGOKmaSs-tM/s1600/IMAG0067.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:Georgia, serif;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">(the High Line)</span></i></span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:Georgia, serif;"><i></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><i><br /></i></span></span><br />3. <b>Call the Curator</b></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><div><iframe width="300" height="100" style="position: relative; display: block; width: 300px; height: 100px;" src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=3294750977/size=grande/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/transparent=true/" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"><a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/track/call-the-curator">Call the Curator by The Android Angel</a></iframe></div><div><br /></div>This was one of the last songs I wrote. But it needed to come early in the album for the following reason. In New York, I spent </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">so </span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">much time walking the streets trying to think of a way to make my songs and music more "interesting" and "innovative". I've always believed the hardest thing to write is a good, simple song but I wanted to find a way to combine the two - simplicity and innovation. I felt the problem with the last Android Angel album was that although I was happy with the melodies, I think the orchestration and arrangements were too obvious and didn't cover any new ground - with the possible exception of "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkgLOGrIhe4">Music of the Android Angel</a>".<br /><br />I want to create music that is </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">consistently </span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">interesting and original yet still honest and affecting in its simplicity. To be honest, I think that desire has actually and unexpectedly manifested itself in my new project <a href="http://freeswim.bandcamp.com/">Free Swim</a>, while 'Marble Sun' is perhaps, musically at least, the sound of the search for that inspiration. I think that is shown on 'Call the Curator'.<br /><br />Halfway through writing the record I started experimenting with different tunings on the guitar. It changed the way I wrote songs as I had to work out new chords - it was a bit like learning the guitar again. This song was in DGDGAD I think.<br /><br />The lyrics to this song are about the day I went to the Museum of Modern Art. I really wanted to see their three Gauguin paintings but couldn't find them anywhere even after asking three different attendants at the museum. I was told to call the curator the following morning to find out where they were. I found it really funny that tens of millions of dollars worth of impressionist masterpieces were unaccounted for and yet it seemed like it was down to me to call the curator the following morning to query their whereabouts. Turns out they were being prepared for the Gauguin exhibition which ran at Tate Modern in London earlier this year.<br /><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">4. <b>Lafayette Bloomed Violet</b></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><b><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><iframe width="300" height="100" style="position: relative; display: block; width: 300px; height: 100px;" src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=759442146/size=grande/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/transparent=true/" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"><a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/track/lafayette-bloomed-violet">Lafayette Bloomed Violet by The Android Angel</a></iframe></span></div><div><br /></div></b>The room I was subletting was owned by an Israeli Saxophonist who had flown back to Europe for a month to perform some shows. In his room there was an electric keyboard on which I wrote this track. I knew fairly swiftly that it was going to be a contender for the lead single because I felt it had a really strong, </span><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">simple </span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">melody and yet was also quite </span><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">interesting</span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"> because the verses are in 7/8.<br /><br />I also found myself singing it a lot as I walked around the city. That was one of the best things about the trip - working on the songs for a couple of hours every morning, then exploring the city for the rest of the day with the melodies buzzing round my head, working on the songs as I went about my days.<br /><br />I'd always wanted to write a track with a prominent Fender Rhodes part. It's such a lovely instrument, and 'Lafayette...' was perfect for it. I'd also been listening to <a href="http://open.spotify.com/track/1sq5otKE9EWT2fkJrrJx6Q">Whitest Boy Alive</a> a lot in the months leading up to the trip and I think their influence is quite obvious here.<br /><br />I'd been spending a lot of time in the Lower East Side around this time, mainly drinking and 'philosophising' with <a href="http://arcs.bandcamp.com/">Arcs</a> bass player Mike who was in town for a few days. I got out my trusty map and tried to incorporate some of the street names in the song (Broome, Lafayette, Grand). That issue of 'simplicity & innovation' is also present in the lyrics of the chorus.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Georgia, serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfn7utWuNDgKAJuvnc-s8jSsoffLZAzW6bzkPj570A8WqQuESV8urD2ajaJoRptwHi3xTik4x0P19JtJjSK8NCEETwm4DJLXmy4_woOkskdSpZEdu9PlKrs-XQ94uk7fq0Pza4LKxK6JA/s1600/IMAG0054.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfn7utWuNDgKAJuvnc-s8jSsoffLZAzW6bzkPj570A8WqQuESV8urD2ajaJoRptwHi3xTik4x0P19JtJjSK8NCEETwm4DJLXmy4_woOkskdSpZEdu9PlKrs-XQ94uk7fq0Pza4LKxK6JA/s320/IMAG0054.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603630572198270946" style="cursor: pointer; width: 192px; height: 320px; " /></a></span></span></span></div><div><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">(my bedroom in Williamsburg)</span></i></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><br />5. <b>Photographers or Ball Players?</b></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><b><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><iframe width="300" height="100" style="position: relative; display: block; width: 300px; height: 100px;" src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=3814071151/size=grande/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/transparent=true/" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"><a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/track/photographers-or-ball-players">Photographers or Ball Players? by The Android Angel</a></iframe></span></div><div><br /></div></b>I love this song. Perhaps because for one moment I gave my head a rest from all the 'simplicity & innovation' meditation to just write a very short, very simple song with a very simple arrangement and very simple lyrics. Perhaps also because I wrote it in Central Park where I'd been playing guitar in different places that morning but had been unable to find a condusive place to sit and write. Just as I was about to give up and head home feeling a little disheartened, I had one last play at a picnic bench in the Pinetum and came up with the chord pattern for 'Photographers...'.<br /><br />The lyrics are perhaps a bit dumb - they were only supposed to be provisional - but the more I listened to them the more they stuck and I rather liked, again, their simplicity. It's New York singing to me. I love the bass line when all the instrumentation drops in and there's Fender Rhodes on this too.<br /><br />The title refers to an afternoon where I played Basketball on a court in Brooklyn with some locals. When one player eased passed me effortlessly and I kind of looked on in awe another player shouted "Hey! Are we photographers or ball players?"<br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:Georgia, serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><br /></span></span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Georgia, serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwhd1Ed0gSfREwXgFBFbh8JWKZ8ua7BnJ6KfVTS6u2PFrB-lLb2_5ovBxbXvK4rLr41KqF7vXd8pVcTKPV0HYyh1TMFECdXKrbsOeyKyfkxUJB3T7GvI4tm3a0YaDhRKywuoCj0W-906g/s1600/IMAG0031.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwhd1Ed0gSfREwXgFBFbh8JWKZ8ua7BnJ6KfVTS6u2PFrB-lLb2_5ovBxbXvK4rLr41KqF7vXd8pVcTKPV0HYyh1TMFECdXKrbsOeyKyfkxUJB3T7GvI4tm3a0YaDhRKywuoCj0W-906g/s320/IMAG0031.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603630989391230418" style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 192px; " /></a></span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">(Cedar Hill, Central Park)</span></i></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><br />6. <b>Brooklyn Bridge</b></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><b><div><iframe width="300" height="100" style="position: relative; display: block; width: 300px; height: 100px;" src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=840491827/size=grande/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/transparent=true/" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"><a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/track/brooklyn-bridge">Brooklyn Bridge by The Android Angel</a></iframe></div><div><br /></div></b>This is the one track on the album that I didn't write in New York. I actually wrote in the months leading up to the trip and it's the sound of the excitement I felt about the trip and the countless months dreaming of New York and seeing the Brooklyn Bridge.<br /><br />It wasn't going to be included on the album until <a href="http://soundcloud.com/joe-truscott/joe-truscott-postcards-from-italy-beirut-cover">Joe</a> (album co-producer, AA bass player, toughest of guys) heard me play it and told me I had to do something with it.<br /><br />I recorded the guitar and the vocal, and Joe added all the rest of the instrumentation. It's very much a collaborative effort as Joe's input </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">really</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"> elevated the track and the result is probably one of the top two or three "songs" I've ever been involved in.<br /><br />The string-section outro made it onto the record by fluke. We were finishing mixing the track and Joe goes "Oh check this out, this is the string arrangement I did for the final chorus but I thought it was a bit too much." I loved it, it gave me insane goosepumps and I figured we should stick it on the end of the track to give it's own space and place on the album. I am forever indebted to Joe for making me include this track on the record as it has pretty much become the centrepiece of the album.<br /><br />Over my 5 weeks in New York, I must have crossed the Brooklyn Bridge about 20 times. I found it so peaceful, particularly at sunset.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Georgia, serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUUY4p7pnTKvVxUtRFt8Jq-lSj-HdbA77AhzdbFRP76E4wBqyrOyBD1_A4wgCnMXhddNPkb7S8UUc05Rt5KR8liWa6gOrAwDQQ3MqZgvs2YGQtBLBdjjb_T0eQYX-dmQO3TPeOHO3VdHk/s1600/IMAG0042.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUUY4p7pnTKvVxUtRFt8Jq-lSj-HdbA77AhzdbFRP76E4wBqyrOyBD1_A4wgCnMXhddNPkb7S8UUc05Rt5KR8liWa6gOrAwDQQ3MqZgvs2YGQtBLBdjjb_T0eQYX-dmQO3TPeOHO3VdHk/s320/IMAG0042.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603631174840063186" style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 192px; " /></a></span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br />(Brooklyn Bridge at night)</span></i></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><br />7. <b>Toodle Pip</b></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><b><div><iframe width="300" height="100" style="position: relative; display: block; width: 300px; height: 100px;" src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=1797899588/size=grande/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/transparent=true/" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0"><a href="http://theandroidangel.bandcamp.com/track/toodle-pip">Toodle Pip by The Android Angel</a></iframe></div><div><br /></div></b>From Toodle Pip onwards, the record becomes more reflective. This was one of the last tracks I wrote - obvious when you consider the title.<br /><br />One of my favourite places to spend an evening was Bryant Park. It's a lovely spot amid the bustle of midtown Manhattan where "the air is full of sugar as the old trucks trundle by, people bumble all around, the buildings touch the sky." They had pianists playing on the east terrace every afternoon too. That's where I wrote this song over a couple of days in the last week of my trip. For every reference on the album to a 'her' or 'love' read New York. "If I'm honest I'd given up on myself, my life and my love, but out of the darkness you harnessed the will to look up." My last record was so, so sad. In New York I made a long-overdue peace with a lot of things. The song is a reflective collage of some of the most memorable sights I saw. I wanted to commit them all to record so I'd be reminded of them every time I hear the song - skylines by the boats, walking the city till my feet bled, the lighthouse around the corner from Andy Warhol's old house on the tip of the state.<br /><br />New York really does have this magical quality that's very hard to describe unless you've been. It's kind of like a Neverland - you really feel like you could never get old there. New York heals.<br /><br />Android Angel has unexpectedly but delightfully evolved into a project where, for the forseeable future, I can travel to a different part of the world every summer for a month and immerse myself in it's art and culture, broaden my mind and cultivate my imagination. Then I can come home and make a record about everything I experienced. I'm so lucky that I can do this and it was my time in New York that made me realise that my life isn't as shit as I'd started to fear (and as I felt I had been led to believe by some others) - but that it's actually rather wonderful. The city will always have an extremely special place in my heart for making me realise that.<br /><br />This summer I am going to work on a farm in the Carpathian Mountains in the north of Romania. I want to go somewhere very different to New York. It will be the first time I have visited my dad's homeland, and I will be harvesting hay for the winter in the days, and writing songs in the evenings. Next summer, California.<br /><br /><a href="http://open.spotify.com/user/paulcolto/playlist/11Tted3v7TXf24VEYbRPrY">Here is a NY Spotify Playlist</a> I made featuring some of the music I listened to and bands I saw while I was out there.<br /><br /><a href="http://youtu.be/EtTmxmSYYLA">Here is an interview I did</a> with Slowdive Music Blog in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Thanks again to everyone who helped in any way on the creation of this record, in particular to Steve for his drums and encouragement, and to Joe for all the time and effort he put in.
